Former champion lightweight jockey, trainer and journalist Peter Gumbleton died in his sleep in Gunnedah on Friday night.

Mr Gumbleton, who was a former journalist at the Namoi Valley Independent, was 80.
He was a jockey who rode in Australia’s major races in the mid-1960s, including the Melbourne Cup, and won an Adelaide Cup, Brisbane Cup, Doomben 10,000 and many other races around the world.
He came second to Galilee in the 1966 Caulfield Cup on a horse called Gala Crest.
Mr Gumbleton was well known as a storyteller and recorded many moments of Gunnedah history through the Namoi Valley Independent.
Mr Gumbleton is survived by his wife Susan and children Daniel and Allison.
His funeral is being held in Gunnedah tomorrow.
