“The Great Debate” will see a team of students from Gunnedah High School and another from St Mary’s come up against council’s well-versed speakers, councillor Rebecca Ryan, customer community relations co-ordinator Chris Frend, general manager Eric Groth and customer community relations manager Lisa Davis in two separate sessions.
The topics were chosen out of a hat at council chambers yesterday afternoon with the St Mary’s team representative Angus Renton, happy to secure the affirmative side with the subject “Homework should be banned”.
Angus will be backed by fellow team mates, Eliza Perkins, Grace Tassell and Phoebe Sumpter in their bid to convince the adjudicators that homework isn’t necessary.
Gunnedah High School teacher Gai Schubert also selected the affirmative side, with the topic “Country living is better than city living” for her team.
Representing the Gunnedah High School and backing country living will be Bree Riley, Jessica Moore, Haylee Murrell and Kustiana Tuckerman.
Speakers are required to prepare four minute speeches, with a warning bell sounding at three minutes.
This year’s adjudicators are Meryl Hennessy, Gary Humphries and Terry Curran.
The debate will be held on Thursday, August 6 from 9am-12pm at The Civic, with all welcome to attend.
