Captain of the Gunnedah side, Alan Woolly Hillier, is heading the search for past players for the side’s 45th reunion to be held on September 11-13.
It was a memorable year for the talented junior outfit which won the 1970 grand final at Narrabri’s Collins Park.
Coached by Doug Dries and managed by Terry Maroney, the Gunnedah young-bloods defeated North Tamworth 11-9 in what Hillier described as a “extremely hard-fought game”.
Norths were undefeated all season but with scores tied 9-all and just 15 minutes remaining in the final, Barry Bates kicked a penalty from halfway to hand the team a thrilling two-point win.
In the first grade grand final that year, home-town Narrabri defeated West Tamworth.
The U19 team’s last reunion was seven years ago in 2008 and prior to that, in 1985.
Hillier is still seeking to contact Ken “Boof” Tydd, Greg Wilkins, Hillary Daly, Jerome Carrigan, Terry Raynor and match-winning hero, Barry Bates.
