In another blow to the Devils finals hopes, the side lost 37-16 to Tamworth Magpies on Saturday.
It was the second straight loss in the Central North Rugby Union’s top tier rounds after a 49-0 defeat to Narrabri.
The competition blow was compounded by the late injury of Devils’ scrumhalf Dave Heyman.
The veteran halfback broke his wrist after landing awkwardly from a tackle in the game’s final minutes.
Heyman, one of only two try scorers for the Devils, was due to have surgery on his injured arm yesterday.
The defeat means Magpies jump Pirates, who lost to Moree 41-20, into third place on the leaderboard.
This widens the margin between Gunnedah and fourth place, further again.
Meanwhile the Red Devils reserves consolidated their finals prospects with a big 71-0 win over Magpies.
It was the side’s fourth consecutive win and a great boost after a tough 28-22 win against Narrabri the week prior.
This weekend the Red Devils are on the road to face Moree at home.
