Club member Ken Hartley said the annual event had been running for about four years and attracted aeromodellers from areas such as Foster, Tuncurry, Port Macquarie, Warialda and Sydney.
The aeromodellers took part in a competition over Saturday and Sunday and were judged under the categories military and civilian. Sub-categories were under 80 inches (wingspan), over 80 inches (wingspan), Already Ready to Fly (ARF) and Top Gun (overall winner for presentation and flying ability).
Mr Hartley said the aim was to create model planes that looked and performed the way the life-sized planes would.
“You’ve got to build an aeromodel that looks like a real one...and the more accurate it is, the higher points you gain,” he said.
“You’ve also got to fly them the way they were built to fly.”
Mr Hartley said the “overall presentation of the build” was also a major factor.
Chris Rutter from Quirindi took out the Top Gun award with his Extra 330 aerobatic civilian model plane, which had a wingspan of 3.2 metres.
The wind was a challenge on Saturday, according to Mr Hartley, however, Sunday’s weather proved to be quite good.
“I think everyone enjoyed themselves,” he said.
Mr Hartley said the club had been running for about 15 years and people were welcome to visit the Quia Road facility on weekends to see what aeromodelling involved.
The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club.
Upcoming events are the Open Glider Competition – Handicap System on June 13-14 and the Pattern Aerobatics Competition on September 5-6.
