Community tennis officer Ken Wray said the new North West Tennis League will revive the inter-town, inter-district competitions of old.
Our region will also be the first in the state to trial the program which is supported by Tennis NSW.
“This gives us in the North West the chance to lead the state and show all the other regions that it can be done and it can fit back in and become an integral part of our tennis calendar,” Wray wrote in letter to participating teams.
Teams from Armidale, Moree, Inverell and two from Tamworth will feature in the trial program which is offering $2000 in prizemoney – half of which will be awarded to the winning team.
Gunnedah’s line-up includes Gabby O’Gorman, Andrew Osmond, Dale Martin, Andrew George and Craig Louis to name a few.
Teams are also able to recruit players from rival clubs with Gunnedah’s Sam O’Gorman a possible starter with Tamworth, with Jodie Moore and Zac McCann also slated for spots in neighbouring teams.
Play will be in a Fast Fours format, meaning it’s the best of three sets, each set is first to four with a tie breaker at 3-all. Other rules include a short deuce and no let rule.
Competition will run over three weeks, starting Sunday at Tamworth’s Treloar Park. The second round will be held at Gunnedah and the third at Inverell.
