On Sunday the Bulldogs were convincing 36-nil winners over Narrabri to consolidate its 18-try, 100-nil thrashing of Wee Waa the week prior.
Gunnedah coach Steve Merlehan said the team had employed a simple but effective strategy in the opening weeks of play.
“We’ve got minimum plays with maximum execution and a very strong kick-chase,” Merlehan said.
The coach commended his charges on how well they played to the greasy conditions and kept the structure tight.
“They stuck to the wet weather game plan, kicked and chased well,” he said.
“The girls wanted a zero scoreline and they got it.
“They lifted in defence in the second as well which I was very happy with.”
In first grade, despite leading for the majority, the Bulldogs went down by four points 38-34 after a strong rally by Narrabri late in the game.
“It was two worlds, two different sides,” co-coach Wayne Griffiths said.
He was impressed by the Bulldogs strong first half but said a lack of possession cost them dearly in the second.
“We were good defensively; everything we trained for was working out,” he said.
“Then we made a mistakes and I guess we found our bad side.”
The Bulldogs front row trucked hard all game
and played almost 70 minutes of football, Griffiths said.
“We’ve got a young side and there’s still a long way to go,” he added.
“We just need to hang in there and tick some boxes.”
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs reserve grade side won its first match of the season, downing Narrabri 28-24 at the weekend.
