The Art Prize attracts a generous prize purse from a huge list of sponsors and the grand champion artist takes home $1000.
This year’s art judge was former Gunnedah artist Yvette Huegill.
“Emily’s work makes wonderful use of complementary colour, composition and simplicity,” Yvette said.
The people’s choice award went to Angelina Wise, with her painting in the open section titled, “Lion”.
Convener Maree Kelly said the exhibition was a huge success with entries up on last year.
“We had more than 100 entries up on last year,” Maree said.
“Especially pleasing was the amount of entries in the novice section and the under 18 years.
“It is amazing how many talented artists there are in the Gunnedah area.”
The Art and Photography Pavilion played host to an official opening on Friday night, with showgirl entrants, judges, artists and guests enjoying the exhibition, with the many art prize and photography winners announced.
This year’s photography judge was well-known local photographer Matt Miegel.
He said his choices depended on “whether he would hang the photograph in his own house” and he praised the high standard.
The grand champion photograph was taken by Mark Hanson, and the reserve champion photographer was Adele Simpson.
The most successful exhibitors were Kate Oram (adults), Kaitlin Newbery (juniors) and Jayde Easey (intermediate).
Photography convener Chris Burgess said although entries were down this year, the standard of works was higher.
“Overall, the entries were of an extremely pleasing standard,” Chris said.
“It was obvious people had taken a lot of particular interest in each category and presented their photographs in a professional manner.
“In particular the juniors, it is evident that young photographers in our area are taking a lot of interest and there is a marked improvement every year in their entries.
“I’d like to thank my volunteers, without them this section isn’t able to run.”
