Gunnedah residents and visitors alike have enjoyed the spectacular views from Porcupine Lookout since the early 1890s when Clerk of Petty Sessions, George Gibson, hacked his way through the scrub to create access for people to enjoy the stunning vista - once a lookout used by the indigenous Kamilaroi people.
The efforts of the Apex Club in the 1950s provided car access for all and today it is a popular picnic and bushwalking area.
Sadly, this has been ruined in part by the thoughtless “environmental vandals” who choose to ignore the rubbish bins and leave their trash to be picked up by the wind and blown all over the reserve.
Obviously these people have driven to the lookout in their cars and I cannot understand why they cannot take their litter home if they are unable to walk the few steps to the bins - the large green objects next to the picnic tables.
Fast food containers, alcohol bottles, cans and cardboard boxes and even the odd syringe or two are just some of the items picked up by early morning walkers to “keep their town beautiful”.
Please, please keep our town beautiful! It is not that hard if everyone does their bit!
