Dr Bale will discuss his in-depth doctoral research into the response of our nation to the loss of almost 61,000 Australian men in WWI.
This research included a specialised study of war grave inscriptions, which were particularly influenced by the separation families felt from their loved ones due to the British policy that bodies remain on the battlefield.
Ron McLean’s book In the Line of Fire, which explores Gunnedah’s involvement in WWI, will also be available for purchase.
The mayoral breakfast is hosted by Gunnedah Shire mayor Owen Hasler in conjuction with the Gunnedah Minister’s Fraternal and the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club.
Cr Hasler said the date of the breakfast was deliberately moved to coincide with the commemorations and believes it will be well attended because close to 500 people from the town and local district took part in the war.
Minister’s Fraternal president Scott Dunlop said the mayoral breakfast was first held in 1998 in response to difficulties being faced in the community with the closure of the abbatoir and mines.
“The mayoral breakfast is an opportunity to come together as a community, to gather as leaders to build relationships, enjoy fellowship and enhance our good community spirit...and also pray for our community,” Mr Dunlop said.
Invitations for the annual breakfast were sent out last week.
