Just after 2.30pm RFS received the call and six RFS tankers were tasked to the scene.
On arrival, firefighters found the grass area to be well alight, but managed to bring it under control by 6pm.
The fire burnt out about eight hectares, including some of the golf course, showground and private property.
An RFS spokesperson said a nearby home was under potential threat but thanks to the crews on the ground, the fire was brought under control before the residence was in serious danger.
No structures were destroyed in the fire.
A fire investigator attended the scene on Sunday night and Monday to determine the cause.
“At this stage it appears to be as a result of children playing with fire, however, investigations are continuing,” the RFS spokesperson said.
The fire came right at the end of the statutory bush fire danger period which ends across all but 13 local government areas today. Tamworth’s bush fire danger period has been extended until April 30 due to dry conditions.
