Around 170 people gathered in the band hall as band members practiced for the Australian National Band Championships to be held in Sydney this weekend.
Jason Katsikaris conducted the senior band and led the audience through a demonstration of how the band prepares for competitions.
Anthony Rowe conducted the junior band and senior B band.
Lachlan King performed well in his HSC and was asked to perform his piece on the tympany on Saturday night. He is a percussionist for all three Gunnedah bands.
At the concert on the weekend, Sue Winsor stepped down as president, with Bruce Sommerlad taking on acting president until the annual general meeting on May 9.
Sue has been the president for more than 10 years and was presented with a bouquet of flowers.
“She has done a wonderful job,” Laurence Rowe told the crowd.
“It’s a high pressure job and we are sorry to see her go.”
This weekend, each band will play four pieces, including a hymn, a test, a march and an own choice. A number of band members are also performing in solo events on the Monday.
The Gunnedah Shire Band has put six months prepartion into the nationals’ and hopes to defend its title.
