Twilight mixed netball is shooting big goals for the Gunnedah Netball Association (GNA) and showing little signs of slowing.
A surge in mixed format’s popularity has given rise to the addition of a second summer competition – the first time GNA has run two in the same summer season.
The association fielded a record 22 teams in last year’s competition and already has 10 teams on the books for the new year tournament which started Thursday.
“It has just exploded, the comp has really taken off,” GNA’s Jackie Small Hicking said.
“It’s not just Gunnedah either.
“A lot of associations have seen their numbers increase on last season.”
GNA held another registration on Wednesday where they hoped to recruit two more teams to make up two divisions of six in the 2015 competition.
“We’re just putting the feelers out to see if we can get two more,” she said.
With more than 100 players signed up for each tournament, the busy schedule is breathing new life into the Gunnedah netball scene, particular among the blokes.
Jackie said they average about three men per team but admittedly may have lost a few to pre-season football commitments.
“Most teams still have a few boys left though,” she said.
Part of the attraction to the mixed format was the chance for both sides of the family to participate.
“Instead of one partner sitting down watching the other play, it’s something they can do together,” Jackie added.
Looking ahead on the 2015 netball calendar is the GNA winter competition which starts the first week of May. In the meantime, representative netball will start training on Sunday, February 8.
