Already, the world has faced sadness and fear with fires destroying Australian homes and, just this morning, 12 people dying at the hands of gunmen in
Paris.
Sometimes, it seems hard to approach the year with a positive outlook.
But we must.
We have heard many times from people in many different horrific circumstances that we cannot let fear rule us.
We only have one life – that we know of – and we must live it.
The world has always been a scary place.
Now, however, there are more people – more people with problems, more people with guns and more industries doing something we don’t
seem able to quantify to our environment.
We have chosen to concentrate our efforts on Gunnedah’s natural environment this year, try our hardest for one year, and see if the whole community can make a difference.
We can’t sit and despair at the things around us, we must take action, in whatever small way we can.
Every year, all of us do our little bit in contributing to cancer fund-raising projects, donating to a number of causes and supporting fund-raising events.
This year, we want to bring together a whole community of small efforts and use them to help our furry friends, the koalas.
All of us are proud of these creatures. They are uniquely Australian, and we have been lucky enough to have one of the strongest, healthiest populations in the country, and the world.
But experts tell us they are dying and they are leaving.
We know Gunnedah people are already out there trying to help these fellows. Let us know what you are doing and we will help build on those efforts.
We will work with the experts to identify where trees are needed, where water stations are needed and what else can be done to make sure our koalas still call Gunnedah home.
This is about more than just our shire, this is about a whole beautiful species.
Whether you are putting water dishes down for koalas somewhere safely away from dogs to help them beat the heat, or slowing down on the highway when one looks like it might be about to cross, there are ways we can all help.
We’re looking forward to working with you to see if one year can make a difference.
