Former Gunnedah resident Austin Lawrence and his wife Jillian have had their caravan parked on the banks of the Namoi since the weekend, when they could walk from one side to the other without getting their feet wet.
This morning, the Lawrences had not shifted their van, but now looked out on a swiftly flowing river.
It was, they said, good to be home, even if it was temporarily.
The Lawrences are now mostly based in Lake Maquarie, but said their recent trips around Australia have highlighted water problems.
“It was absolutely amazing how dry the country was,” Mr Lawrence said.
“The rivers and creeks have stopped flowing.
“When we came back to Camooweal, we camped on a dry creek bed.”
They have visited the dry Lake Argyle in Western Australia, and worked on a cattle station in the Northern Territory where owners said the land was dry for the first time since they had owned it.
The couple said travel had confirmed their love of their home town – even the bore water they once thought was hard.
“Everywhere we went there were water restictions,” Mr Lawrence said.
The two will continue to enjoy their temporary view of the Namoi River until this weekend.
