A police spokesman said the recent spike in thefts has been predominantly due to people leaving their vehicles unlocked.
“Criminals are opportunistic and are not targeting particular areas of town, they are walking the streets trying car doors,” the spokesman said.
“This type of crime is preventable – people need to ensure they are locking their vehicles.”
He said there are certain obligations in relation to vehicle safety.
“It is an offence to leave your car unlocked,” the spokesman said.
“Oxley Local Area Command are urging people to be mindful of vehicle security and to remain vigilant about locking their cars.”
