Fonda was invited to join the “Miskonduct Team” by the ladies of Miskonduct Klothing in Newcastle.
During this campaign, women wear a different frock for 31 days of the month, posting their progress on social media or holding other frock-related events.
Fonda decided the best way to contribute to the fund-raiser would be through her family’s business, The Hair Studio, and to donate $10 from every make-up session during October.
She has also held a raffle for a hair and make-up hamper.
“I hope that by donating $10 from every make-up this month it will not only help to achieve my goal but I can help others feel happy when they leave the salon knowing they are helping to make a difference to a worthwhile cause,” Fonda said.
“Many of the ladies that have come in rarely have the time to put on make-up as they are so busy caring for others, it makes me happy to be able to make them feel special.
“It’s not only the women who have donated, men who have lost loved ones have donated and I have been so touched hearing stories of their mothers, sisters and wives.”
Fonda said although there had been a few tears talking about lost loved ones this month, everyone has had fun getting together and fund-raising for the cause.
Local writer Darlene Hall, author of Kangaroo Cuddles, along with her husband Mark of MDH Haulage have been major supporters of Frocktober.
Darlene lost her aunt to ovarian cancer in May this year and after seeing Fonda’s post on social media, wanted to contribute in the fund-raising.
“My aunt lost her battle earlier this year and she gave so much to so many people yet never asked for anything in return,” Darlene said.
“I made the donation in the hope that some day it will help to find a cure against this awful disease.
“After showing Mark Fonda’s amazing handiwork and telling him of her fund-raising efforts, we made the decision to make a donation from our company as well.”
Fonda’s original goal was set at $500 and she has already raised more than $1000.
The salon has also been fund-raising for breast cancer with a recent GHD raffle, with a special breast cancer-themed straightener.
Local resident Jan Commins was happy to support a cause close to her heart after losing her sister to breast cancer.
Jan’s new hair is based on the breast cancer edition GHD colours to help raise awareness.
Jan also visited the salon to have her make-up done in support of Frocktober.
Jan said it was very important for young women to be screened early as early detection was the key to treatment.
“Women who don’t get the free screening are slipping through the net,” Jan said.
“There needs to be more rebates or reduced rates introduced so we see more receiving the screens.”
