We have all heard the warnings from clinicians how waistlines of Australian kids are growing bigger by the day and the need to encourage them to live active lifestyles.
One of the best ways for kids to stay healthy is through junior sport and triathlon is great example.
A new program being wheeled out in Gunnedah this summer called TRYstars Kids Triathlon, aims to cater to the junior participants looking to get involved in the multi-discipline sport.
Open to kids aged 7-12 years, Try Stars is a non-competitive program geared to develop skills, ability and fitness with a big focus on fun and enjoyment, its website says.
Gunnedah Cycling and Triathlon Club spokeswoman Cath Murray said the eight, one hour sessions are an “introduction” to triathlon, meaning no experience is necessary.
“It’s all about participation and developing their motor skills,” Cath said.
At the end of the course, which starts on November 6 and breaks over Christmas, the club plans on taking a small contingent of juniors to the Trial Bay family triathlon in February. But there is no obligation for participants to attend.
The TRYstars package will feature sessions of modified swim, ride and run games and include a triathlon starter kit of a shirt, cap, bottle and bag among other goodies for those taking part.
The training is run in co-operation with Triathlon Australia which will also be offering training for local TRYstars mentors this weekend.
Two sessions at heavily subsidised rates will be hosted in Gunnedah over consecutive days (November 1-2) – the first as an introduction to TRYstars coaching and the second a base level coaching and development course for TRYstars.
