The opening of the Gunnedah’s refurbished cultural precinct was combined with the opening of artist Liz Priestley’s new exhibition Burnished Lights.
The exhibition is a collection of encaustic (wax) paintings described as a “powerful, atmospheric and complex interpretation of both the immediate physical landscape and that of the internal landscape”.
The Manilla artist, who is due to have her first child this week, said she had been working on the exhibition for a year.
“There was quite a bit of time and work and effort that has gone into it,” she said at the opening.
“And it is always rewarding to see it up.”
Council’s cultural development co-ordinator Andrea Bruno said the paintings were reminiscent of the work of great artist J. M. W. Turner.
The exhibition will be on display at the Creative Arts Gallery in Chandos Street until Friday, November 24.
