Neighbour Fay Hogbin said they only discovered the damage yesterday morning when they woke to find a clean saw mark through the tree.
Mrs Hogbin said the tree was one of a number of crabapple trees planted about 12 years earlier.
“It’s shocking,” Mrs Hogbin said. “It was such a beautiful tree.”
She said her husband Bob and a number of other residents put a bit of effort into maintaining the park.
No other trees were damaged and resident Michael Sparkes said it was usually a quiet area.
Gunnedah Police said yesterday broken windows had been reported in nearby Jarmain Close on the same night, but it was not known if the incidents were related.
Mrs Hogbin said residents were worried vandals would return and do further damage to trees in the park.
