Gunnedah sisters Mikaela and Teigan Meyers love to ride.
In fact St Xavier’s student, Tegian, would ride her horse all day, every day, if she could, mum Jenny said.
Both have the world at their feet and they’re quickly making big names for themselves in state and national stock horse competitions.
Such is their success, Mikaela was recently crowned the overall High Point Horse Rider combination in the 13-under-15 years age division at the Australian Stock Horse Youth National Show in Tamworth.
Younger sister Teigan missed out on her division’s High Point honours by just half a point, after three long, hot days of competition across a number of events.
The Meyer girls are trained by mum at the family-owned Wundurra Stud where they ride, show, breed and sell Australian Stock Horses.
“They both love competing at the high level as it makes them work that little bit harder,” Jenny said.
“When and if they are lucky enough to win, they know it’s because they’ve done their homework, so to speak.
“They are both very competitive but support each other pretty much when schooling horses at home and taking them to a competition,” mum said.
The sisters, who have been riding since they could walk, are afforded the benefit of being able to ride not one but many horses at the family stud.
“It allows them to be versatile in their riding because of the different natures and temperaments of the individual mounts they get to ride,” she said.
Back at the Tamworth Nationals, Mikaela was fortunate to also ride her sister’s horse Todds Tiger Lillie in the 13-under 15 years Open Campdraft where she placed equal-first in the opening round.
She then competed in a ride-off to determine the top rider and after an impressive run, secured first place for the event.
She was also the High Point ASHLA (Australian Stock Horse Ladies Assoc) rider over the Campdraft section of the show.
Mikaela qualified from this event to contest the State Junior Judging Final held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April 2015.
Earlier this month, Teigan contested the Australian Stock Horse NSW State Breeders Championships in Scone.
Mikaela however missed the competition to due a riding fall in the days prior.
Riding Todds Tiger Lillie in Scone, Teigan again placed at top of the standings across a number of events.
She placed second in Rider, third in Hack and Working in the 10-and-under 13 years age group.
To polish off a fantastic few weeks of competition, Teigan also won the under 13 years Challenge overall honours after placing fourth in Hack, second in Working and second in Time Trial.
Teigan rode her home-bred mare Wundurra Schylee to win the corresponding event last year.
Lillie and Teigan also contested the open events taking out a third and fourth in Open Hack events and placed third and fourth in the Open Working events – a remarkable achievement for a 12-year-old youth rider.
Last weekend Teigan competed at the All Schools event held at AELEC in Tamworth over four days.
Riding Todds Tiger Lillie, Teigan placed second (Reserve Champion)in the Challenge among a field of 43 riders in the for 10-12 years division.
Not content with that achievement, she also claimed a number more top placings in the hack and sporting events as well.
Mikaela was unable to ride in Tamworth after injuring herself in a fall earlier this month.
The sisters have three to four more competitions before year is out, then a week’s reprieve over Christmas before the gearing up for more shows in January.
