Gunnedah Shire Council has voted to spend $13,900 to replace a fence along the side of the walkway and fix lighting.
“The side boundary fencing is in a poor state with numerous palings dislodged,” a report to council’s October meeting stated.
“Further, the light standards are non-functional and require replacement.”
Council will replace the timber fence with steel security fencing, and instal new light fittings.
The report also said there was a “clear opportunity” for al fresco dining in the area and the possibility that the adjoining commercial premises – which include Subway and Better Be Thai Restaurant – could have access to the space above the alley.
“In terms of the first floor void, it does have commercial potential,” the report said. “However, providing effective access without compromising the use of the walkway will be challenging.”
Mayor Owen Hasler said at the moment, the area was “an eyesore”.
“We want to show some pride in that area for the business community and for the locals who utilise it,” Cr Hasler said.
“It is important to maintain it to standards we can be proud of.”
General manager Eric Groth said there had been discussions about the possibility of closed circuit TV security cameras in the area, and council would consider how to make the area safer.
Gunnedah Shopping Centre Pty Ltd bought the property at 178 Conadilly Street in conjunction with the Coles complex development in 2006.
A condition of Coles’ occupancy was that walkway access be provided and maintained from Conadilly Street to the development.
Gunnedah Shopping Centre Pty Ltd converted the existing shop into a thoroughfare. The first floor section of the building remained empty.
Council agreed in 2013 to acquire the walkway as part of an outstanding debt owing to council. The sale was finalised on June 30, this year.
