A home tournament win has set Shaylee Martin the perfect platform to launch into this weekend’s State Junior Development Series (JDS) Finals in Sydney.
Martin took out the 12 years girls singles title at the Gunnedah Junior Age Championships earlier this month.
She beat Gunnedah clubmate Sophie Williams in the final and combined with her singles rival to win the division’s doubles title as well.
“She’s been hitting the ball quite well,” Gunnedah tennis coach Dale Martin said.
Shaylee, who is in her first year at the Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS), recently travelled to Foster for representative tennis duties and will head to Coffs Harbour in a few weeks time for more tournament play.
In the meantime, she will join a number of Gunnedah tennis talents at the NSW finals.
“It will be a big step up in standard and a good learning curve,” the coach said.
Also in the mix in Sydney will be Cooper Wilkinson who won three titles at the Gunnedah championships.
Young Wilkinson’s claims included the 10 years boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles.
“He’s probably one of our standouts at the moment,” Dale said.
“He won a country title earlier this year.”
The JDS finals are the climax for the junior representatives, serving as an end of season finale for those competing.
