A new digital plate or image receiver, worth $45,000, is the most recent addition and second stage of the upgrade to X-ray services in Gunnedah.
Radiographer Karyn Bond said the new equipment, including X-ray table and general X-ray unit, is completely digital, faster and more user-friendly.
“We no longer have to use film, and the image is almost instant, not only saving time but we are able to notify doctors immediately,” Ms Bond said.
“The image is instantly on the Hunter New England network allowing other sites to view it for refferals or advice.
“The new equipment has reduced waiting times considerably and we have the ability to provide fast results for people in pain, or children – it’s all about patient comfort.
“Another benefit is we can see our patients at all times in case anything happens.”
The new imaging equipment uses 40 per cent less radiation than the old equipment to produce high quality images.
The adjustable X-ray table is more suitable for bariatric (clinically obese) patients, with the ability to hold patients up to 250kg.
It can also be adjusted higher and lower than the previous table, making it easier for children, the elderly and less mobile people to access.
Ms Bond said the Gunnedah department was the first to go “fully digital” in the north-west region.
Director Hunter New England Imaging Michael Symonds said Gunnedah provided a wonderful service for the region.
“They do a wonderful job here and it is fantastic to have a radiographer on call every day of the week in Gunnedah,” Mr Symonds said.
“The improvements to patient care are oustanding.”
The initial upgrades began in June 2013.
