The Gunnedah Red Devils reserve grade has one last score to settle before kicking up their heels for another year in Central North Rugby.
The Devils will play Scone on Saturday in the second grade, bottom tier Plate Final in Narrabri.
Kick-off has been scheduled bright and early at 9.30am to marry up with the remainder of the CNRU finals later that day.
Despite their early start on grand final day, Devils coach Stu Morrison is confident his troops will get the job done.
“We’re had a really good training session last night,” Morrison said on Wednesday.
“And we’re back to a full strength side this week.”
So far this season, the Devils have secured two wins from two matches against Scone.
“Although we haven’t played them for a couple of weeks now,” Morrison added.
Gunnedah also holds the claim as having won every match against the bottom tier sides this season bar one – that slip up was back in round 11 in June when the Devils lost to Inverell.
Last week Scone only just got over the line when they beat Inverell 12-11 to progress to the Plate Final.
The tight contest would have taken plenty of punch out of Scone’s firepower and just enough, Morrison hoped, to help his Devils secure the win this weekend.
“We’re very confident,” Morrison said.
“We’ve had some good hard training sessions.
“I think we’re peaking at the right time.”
In other final fixtures on Saturday, Pirates will play Moree for the reserve grade top tier premiership, while Scone will challenge Walcha in the first grade, second tier final before Narrabri hosts Pirates in the first grade, top tier grand final kicking off at 3.10pm.
It might be slim pickings for Gunnedah in this year’s finals series but that doesn’t mean they won’t be well represented on both sides of the fence in the top grade decider.
The Narrabri coaching reins will be steered by former Gunnedah old boy Hunter Harley while their opponents, the Pirates, have another former local at the helm as captain in Andrew Moodie.
