We’ve all heard this phrase. This week it was someone commenting on a massive piece of shiny machinery being driven down a laneway.
Today is the first official set-up day at the AgQuip site and it is like a scene from The Lego Movie.
People in hard hats and huge machines are busy at work putting together the “biggest agricultural supermarket in Australia”.
Rural Press Events’ general manager Barry Harley says the recipe is tried and true. Even in the day of online retailing, people still want to walk on the dirt and feel the metal under their hands. They want the “tactile” experience.
Mr Harley says one long-term exhibitor pulled out last year, saying they were going to strictly online trading. They’re back this year.
Agricultural products are pretty much the domain of farmers and, even though times change and you might be able to check on crops via a computer, most farmers still like to farm and love the chance to catch up with other farmers.
AgQuip pulls together an amazing collection of equipment – and people – on one large site.
About 100,000 people visit over the three days.
It’s a long way from the early days of 1973. But the spirit is the same. As The Lego Movie says, everything is awesome. And why wouldn’t it be when you create Disneyland for farmers.
