In the Zone 3 championship play-offs at Quirindi Bowling Club, the 31-year-old Wise, playing out of South Tamworth BC, defeated New England bowler John McIlwaine 31-24 in the final to become one of 16 qualifiers for the State finals in October.
District champions from North West, Barwon, Gwydir, New England and Central North contested the zone play-offs with Wise downing Rex Skuthorpe (Barwon) 31-19 in the semi-final before following up with his finals success against McIlwaine.
Nathan Wise started playing bowls as a junior in Gunnedah in the mid-1990s, graduating to win the Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club singles championship in 2004.
He has since become of NSW’s most accomplished bowlers and in 2009 was a member of the Engadine Cougars side which won the prestigious NSW Premier League.
He has also won several of the biggest singles tournaments in country NSW. At the zone finals, North West representative Ray Dixon (Wee Waa) won the senior Over 60 singles, downing Armidale’s Richie Clutterbuck (New England) 31-25 in the final.
In the NSW President’s Reserve singles at zone level, Greg Wilkins (Gwydir) beat Brian Lockyer (New England) 31-28.
