The winners of the Restaurant and Catering Australia awards for Northern NSW were announced last week in Newcastle, but Thub Thim Thai owner Annie McKinnon was unable to attend.
She didn’t know the restaurant had been awarded an honourable mention until the award arrived in the mail this week.
Thub Thim Thai was the only Thai restaurant to win an award.
Ms McKinnon has run Thub Thim Thai in Gunnedah for more than four years, and had an award-winning Thai restaurant in Moree for more than 14 years before that.
She said the titles were awarded follwing a secret visit by the award judges.
Restaurant and Catering Australia promotes the awards as “the most dependable and authoritative guide to Australia’s best restaurants and caterers.”
“With more than 500 trained judges and 1500 entrants, the Awards for Excellence set the national benchmark. They are the most important and respected industry awards, specifically designed to objectively recognise and promote industry best practice.”
Winner of northern NSW’s restaurant of the year was Esca Bimbadgen Restaurant at Pokolbin.
Thub Thim Thai was Gunnedah’s only restaurant to make the grade, but Tamworth’s Marigold Inn Restaurant was a joint winner of the best Chinese restaurant, with Dragon Palace at Tamworth also among the finalists.
Tamworth’s Cascada Restaurant won an honourable mention for best new restaurant, while the Best Western Sanctuary Inn was among finalists for best restaurants in a motel, hotel or resort.
