The Gunnedah Red Devils are edging closer to the start of its 2014 season and after a few solid weeks on the training paddock, the club is turning its attention to something a little more gentlemanly – the season launch.
One of the main attractions of the Friday night festivities will be the jersey auction where local business bid to have its name printed on the back of its number of choice for the 2014 season. The intention is for the businesses to be also promoted on home game programs and in-game announcements.
The auction will tie in with a three-course meal, live entertainment and evening refreshments.
Devils’ first grade co-coach Nik Hannaford was quietly confident about the club’s season ahead with an average of two squads lacing up for the twice-a-week bootcamp sessions being run by Battle PT 2380.
“Not only has it been great for fitness but also with the players’ communication and teamwork,” Hannaford said.
While setting up for the photo, the Devils mentor showed his skills are not limited to the coach clipboard either.
After a suggestion from the NVI reporter that two wine glasses from the fridge be used as props, Hannaford emerges with the more suited champagne glasses instead.
“You’d want these ones wouldn’t you,” he clarifies, raising the short-stemmed glassware.
The club prides itself on its social functions running by the notion the team that plays together, stays together.
More seriously though, much of the club’s focus is on the Tens for Ten Thousand rugby carnival to be held in Gunnedah on March 8.
The Devils expected to field a strong line-up despite the omission of a few players who are tasked for Central North rugby duties and a few more who have prior commitments.
The club is also hoping to sign a few more key players for the 2014 season but nothing has been confirmed at this stage.
More than 100 tickets for the season launch have already been sold. It’s a 6.30pm start on Friday at the rugby club on Wandobah Road and new and prospective players, club members and sponsors are invited to attend.
Cost is $45 a ticket with guests treated to the as mentioned above entitlements. Tickets must be pre-purchased from Fleming & Ross at 97 Marquis Street.
