A new assistance system to start from July 1 had been agreed to by the federal and state governments last year, however Prime Minister Abbott said the problem needed addressing quicker than the original timetable.
The system would be based on income support for farmers, with Cabinet looking at logistics and the legal framework.
Meanwhile, household support and freight rebates will be among the list of drought assistance measures up for discussion at a meeting in Narrabri next Friday, February 14.
Narrabri farmer Phillip Kirkby said a north west drought committee convened in 2003 had been “revived” in an effort to lobby governments about the desperate plight of the region's farmers.
Mr Kirkby said they would be asking Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce to attend, and former New England MP Tony Windsor would be in attendance.
He added the committee had flagged a number of support measures they wanted governments to consider, including financial assistance to help keep farm households functioning, freight rebates and subsidies to help with the sinking of bores.
Everyone is invited to the meeting, which is at the Narrabri RSL Club starting at 11am.
Gunnedah farmers struggling with drought will have access to information about ways to cope at a workshop held later this month.
The Local Land Services will also hold two workshops on February 19 and 20 in Tamworth and Gunnedah.
They will cover issues including protein and energy, choosing the right feeds, how to prepare for when the drought breaks, animal welfare and government assistance.
The Tamworth workshop will be held on February 19 from 9am-1pm and the Gunnedah event at the same time on February 20. Location to be advised.
