Mr Anderson had been instrumental in acquiring a grant through the Office of Communities, Community Building Program for 2012, and he was invited along to a barbecue lunch to inspect the finished project and declare it “ready for use”.
It was also an opportunity for club members to express their appreciation for the funding, which saw the club’s outdoor area extended.
Mr Anderson applauded the members for their work in developing the facility after acquiring land along the Bulga Road and literally dismantling the club house at its former location to erect at its permanent home.
Mr Anderson said gun clubs played an important role in helping to keep the sport alive, allowing people to enjoy using firearms in a controlled environment.
“Firearms will always be an important part of country life, especially on properties and I congratulate all of you on this excellent facility,” he said.
Mr Anderson said he supported strict licensing laws but would oppose any move to ban firearms completely.
The merger of the Boggabri and Gunnedah Gun Clubs came about 50 years ago, with the club operating from its Hunt’s Lane property.
The club acquired the land on Bulga Road about four years ago and is now set up with two ranges and a club house, with a generator providing electricity.
The clay target ranges are for field shooting and “down the line”, with the club continuing to grow each year and a swag of youngsters coming through the ranks.
Prospective members can be as young as 12, with all shooters required to undergo a rigorous safety test before they can become licensed.
Anyone interested in joining the club can come along for a trail shoot under strict supervision.
