Your swimmers need YOU

“Give us your support, Gunnedah.”
That is the message as several local competitors prepare to take on some of NSW’s best young swimmers at this weekend’s Country Regionals.
The event, taking place at the War Memorial Pool, is one of the final opportunities for participants to secure places at the upcoming Country and National championships.
Gunnedah Swimming Club coach Pat McAdam said some vociferous local support could help the children achieve their goals.
“A lot of the kids do not often get the opportunity to swim in front of family and friends,” she said.
“This is an opportunity for the swimmers to show what they can do and also for people to see the young talent out there.
“There is a lot riding on this for kids who still need to qualify for Country and Nationals. The support could be decisive in helping them do that.
“It’s a matter of getting as many people down there and giving them that support.”
Scores of swimmers from across the state will take part in the two-day competition, which will include timed heats and finals.
Competitors from under nine to 15 and over will take part, with swims scheduled in the various disciplines.
Excellent performances could see competitors post qualifying times for next month’s NSW Country Championships and April’s Australian titles.
McAdam said she was looking forward to the competition, which is being held in Gunnedah for the first time in several years.
“It is good to have a carnival of this calibre in Gunnedah,” she said.
“It is going to give youngsters who do not normally go to events like this the opportunity to go up to the next level.
“Gunnedah people get to see the swimmers going up and down in the pool, but do not get to see them in action. Now here’s the chance.”
Among local swimmers in action this weekend will be talented Gunnedah swimmer Eden Kleinschafer.
The 11-year-old, who has been among Gunnedah’s leading juniors in the sport for several years, is likely to take part in a number of the featured races.
With good performances at the recent NSW State Age titles – including a sixth place in the 100m freestyle final – under her belt and home support to count on, the Gunnedah South Public School pupil is anticipating an enjoyable competition.
“It is better when you are on your home turf,” she said. “You know the pool and you know your friends will be there.
“You also know that you will have the good support from your club.
“It is quite exciting that it’s here.”
Swimming gets underway at 10am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. |
